One of the best ways to get your Jazz playing together is to play along with your favorite artist. Playing transcriptions (preferably ones that you've done yourself) will help you with your sound, phrasing, technique, developing your jazz language and many other aspects of your jazz artistry. Play a transcription either from memory or from the written sheet music along with one of your favorite artist. Try to match their articulation, phrasing, sound and "attitude." After awhile certain things will start to show up in your own playing. Also transcriptions are a wellspring of melodic ideas and licks.
Here's a video of me reading along with Harold Land's Blues Walk transcription. This transcription and many others can be found at my website "www.charlesmcneal.com."
