On the H4n, you can only create or play back an mp3 file while the H4n is in Stereo mode. You can not create or play back an mp3 file while the H4n is in MTR mode.
Furthermore, you can only convert a stereo .wav file into mp3, you can not convert a mono .wav file into mp3.
But the plot thickens, a bit. If you want to convert a .wav file to mp3, you need a stereo .wav file to start with. However, with the H4n, you can create a stereo .wav file in either Stereo mode or MTR mode. In Stereo mode, this is the default file type created for all recordings. In MTR mode, you can create either a mono .wav file or a stereo .wav file, the latter if you link two tracks together before you make the recording.
If you create the stereo .wav file in Stereo mode, you can convert the .wav file to mp3 right away. For example, press Menu > (click on FILE) > (scroll to and click on a .wav file) > (click on MP3 ENCODE) > (click on BIT RATE to select a rate, 128k and up works best) > (click on EXECUTE), then wait for the conversion to finish. You will now find an .mp3 version of the .wav file in the folder (press Menu > FILE and scroll through the list to find it).
If you create the stereo .wav file in MTR mode, you first have to move the .wav file from MTR mode into Stereo mode, then you can convert the file to mp3. Stereo and MTR modes store files in different folders on the SD card. In Stereo mode, the folders are named FOLDER01 through FOLDER10, but in MTR mode, the folders are named PRJ000 and up (as a default; you can change the names). If you want to move a stereo .wav file from an MTR mode project folder into a Stereo mode folder (to convert it to mp3), this is what you would do:*
While in MTR mode, press Menu > (click on FILE) > (scroll to and click on a stereo .wav file) > (click on MOVE) > (click on MOVE TO) > (select STEREO FOLDER) > (click on NEXT) > (scroll to and click on a stereo folder name) > (click on YES to confirm the operation), then the stereo .wav file is moved. Now, switch the H4n to Stereo mode, and convert the stereo .wav file to mp3 just like the above description for Stereo mode.
If you're having trouble with this and you think it might be due to a very big .wav file, create a short test recording and try the mp3 conversion on the test recording.
