A list of mouthpieces used by Stan Getz:

1945-1950: used a metal 4* Tone Master (Used during his stint with the Benny Goodman Band.)

1950-1954: used a White Streamline Brilhart mouthpiece #7.

1954-1956: used a Rubber Berg Larsen (used during an album Gerry Mulligan.)

1957-1971: began to use an early Florida Model rubber 5* in 1957 because it was easier to play ballads on. Used this model throughout the
Bossa Nova sessions until the 1964 Carnegie Concert with Joao Gilberto where Stan used a rubber Vandoren T-20 mouthpiece because
his sax and mouthpiece were stolen. Stan began using #5 strength reeds during the Bossa Nova years and the Chick Corea sessions in
1967-68.

1971-1974: Getz traded his Link for a modified Bobby Dukoff #5 Hollywood model and an old refaced metal Selmer C**.

1974-1988: Getz returned to his old set-up of the rubber Link by having two custom tailored Links, a refaced 7* Florida Model and a refaced
early Babbitt 5*. The Babbitt was refaced by Ben Harrod.

1989-1991: Dissatisfied with the bulkiness of the Links Getz requested that material be taken off to make the Links skinnier and easier to
play by his standards, until he was advised that taking off material on the beak of the mouthpiece would change its sound and timbre. So, he
controversially switched to a Meyer Rubber 8S which was tailored to his request.

The "double lip" technique used by Getz was often painful and it caused unnecessary squeaks. So, during late 1956 Getz devised a new embouchure wherein he curled his bottom lip and had his teeth actually touch the mouthpiece. He slightly curled his front lip and tightened his embouchure making a sad face grimace. He used this embouchure with the rubber Babbitt and the rubber Florida Link until 1962. During the Bossa Nova years Getz started to jam the mouthpiece as far as it could go in his mouth. There is no conclusive explanation, only the fact that Getz' drug problem weakened him or made him sick to the point he had no control of his embouchure, or articulation. Listen to "Con Alma" on the 1967 "Sweet Rain", or "Captain Marvel]. The bossa Nova years and the Chick Corea fusion era Stan made one of his greatest albums with "Bob Brookmeyer and Friends (w/Elvin Jones and Ron Carter.) his sound is uncommonly as smooth and clean. I believe that Getz loosened his embouchure and used less of his bottom lip enabling him to play with more agility and response. His playing and technique was his best in years. Getz returned to his regular embouchure through "Sweet Rain" under the sheer drudgery of drugs, presumably. He did a bit of a Burt Bacharach album with that embouchure.

It wasn't until 1971 where Stan's years became his most prosperous, contrary to what critics believe. His fusion dates with Chick Corea were very successful. A traditionalist, Getz never liked to change the way he played and sounded, but the particular situation Getz was in coerced his change. Soon enough, Getz totally changed his embouchure to that of Sonny Rollins, just basic and loose. Although I caught him in a regular session playing with his old embouchure in a 1971 concert bill. Getz acquired a metal Hollywood Dukoff 5 and Selmer D. He quickly returned to his rubber Link in 1974 and his traditional quartet style until, in 1975, Getz was asked to do a reunion Brazilian album with Joao Gilberto, Oscar Castro Neves, and Miucha Buarque. This is his greatest albums ever. and the most underrated one. You won't hear one squeak on this album Stan plays as clean and lyrical as ever with newer Brazilian material. Getz used the loose Rollins embouchure with the 5* Babbitt. He played cleanly like this until 1980 when his turbulent
drug addicted lifestyle started to take effect on his health. The 80s were a wasteland of recordings,except the most controversial recording ever,1983's
Chet Baker with Stan Getz The Stockholm Concerts where he played beautifully, and zestfully too. Stan had no choice but to use what came naturally to him, his old embouchure. He later changed to a Meyer just before his death.

E' morto nel 91, e a un certo punto si era ripulito da droghe a abusi di ogni tipo (alcool e picchiava la moglie).
In un intervista dichiaro' che almeno in una certa parte della sua vita e' diventato l'uomo che sarebbe dovuto diventari anni fa'.
Io ho appena comperato un live in Danimarca con pezzi del 89 e 91 e suona ancora bene anche se era gia malato.
Pensa che l'ho scoperto quando ha suonato il solo per Huey lewis and the news in Small World.

nel disco con gilberto otteneva quel suono incredibile con un 5*... :shock:

Per me che sono un fans di Stan Getz, è stato un vero piacere trovare queste notizie.
Ho sempre trovato inusuale l'imboccatura di Getz, con il labbro inferiore molto interno negli ultimi anni e mi era venuto il sospetto che suonasse algli inizi con il doppio labbro, come si usava per il clarinetto un secolo fa.
Per avere quel tipo di suono, pressochè unico, non poteva usare grandi aperture ed in ogni caso, a quei livelli, sono quasi sempre riadattate.
Gianni Basso disse di lui che era uno che non sbagliava mai ed era vero, mentre Getz stesso disse che non aveva mai suonato una nota che non avesse avuto un significato.
Io ascoltando decine e decine di registazioni live (e non da studio) devo dire che è assolutamente vero, aiutato anche da una tecnica mostruosa.
Rimango in attesa di avere altre chicche come quelle giÃ* scritte.

e perchè??...io ho letto da qualche parte che il suo ottolink in ebanite (non ti sò dire quale di quelli della lista) era stato aperto a 8*.......non immagino un suono del genere con un c* (che compare nella lista......ma la maggior parte delle sue imboccature erano modificate.....quindi, quasi sicuramente anche aperte...)
come ance ho letto che usava le vandoren.. ;)

stan Getz è stato uno dei miei primi eroi, soprattutto nei live è qualcosa di unico..certo dire che non sbagliava mai le note è quantomeno eccessivo..io ho delle registrazioni dove non riesce a prendere i bassi...ascoltiamolo ancora, ci fa sempre bene e il suo suono è inimitabile, o quasi!

Scusami ma mi sono espresso male, intendevo dire aperture non eccessive.
Per le note gravi è vero che a volte gli sono uscite sporche, ma non erano sbagliate.

è vero quello che dici daniele....ad ascoltarlo (e io l'ho asoltato mooooolto..) a volte non prende le note basse.....gli parte l'armonico sopra (o come si dice....)..ma sono molto rari questi casi...........comunque penso che la frase "non sbaglia mai" sia riferita alla costruzione dei suoi soli...

beh, non è un problema il fatto che un jazzista suoni "male" (ma che significa?) qualche nota, che attacchi i bassi colpendo anzichè smorzando, ciò che conta è la bellezza del solo nel suo complesso, la profonditÃ* del pensiero espressa con i suoni, compreso il rumore..e Stan, in quanto a bellezza, purezza ha avuto e ha pochi rivali..anche se a me non piace proprio mitizzare! Poi, ho una registrazione di Night and day dove a mio parere suona veramente male, anche il timbro è scadente, pieno di fischi e cose sgradevoli, forse aveva bevuto o fumato troppo! :lol: E' chiaro che basta ascoltare Miles Davis, forse il jazzista più completo e acclamato di tutti i tempi, per rendersi conto che qualche nota "sbagliata" non rovina di certo un artista inarrivabile..A me quando suonano "eccessivamente bene" un pò mi rompono, perchè sono spesso (non sempre, vedere Brecker!) troppo scontati...Viva Stan, Davis e tutti i musicisti imperfetti!

Poi, ho una registrazione di Night and day dove a mio parere suona veramente male, anche il timbro è scadente, pieno di fischi e cose sgradevoli, forse aveva bevuto o fumato troppo! :lol:

Se ti riferisci ad una registrazione in studio con Bill Evans della Verve, dove ci sono due "Night and Day", è proprio vero, ma in quella registrazione ci son altri brani in cui Stan suona quasi cercando un tono sguaiato con frasi di assolo che sembrano fatti per far ridere.
Mi sono chiesto anch'io se erano voluti o era come pensi tu....
In ogni caso la cosa che mi affascina nei soli di Getz, specie degli ultimi anni, è che spesso li esegue reinventando la melodia pensando ad un'armonia diversa da quella reale del brano ma perfettamente sovrapponibile ad essa, come ad esempio in questo "I cant get started"

Il problema è che non mi intendo moltissimo di bocchini e ance...secondo voi, per riprodurre un suono pulito come quello del periodo della Bossa Nova, Desafinado etc, cosa dovrei accoppiare?

Non puoi accoppiare niente.. per quel suono bisogna essere STAN GETZ, ma purtroppo ce n'è stato uno solo

ottolink in ebanite..se suoni da poco 7-7*,altrimenti puoi provare a vedere come ti trovi con un 8 o 8*....
